Past thirty or so people, estimating, operations and the office start pulling in different directions, and each one blames the other when a job goes sideways. Underneath it are the managers in the middle, the procedures that live in people’s heads, and the overhead that grew faster than the profit. For construction and trades companies, engineering and other project-based firms, and divisions inside larger companies, there are two ways I work.

If you run your own business

Revenue is up, profit isn’t. The year was busier than ever and the bank account didn’t notice.
Estimates are a guess. Some jobs make money, some lose it, and you can’t tell which until they’re over.
Everything runs through you. Quotes, scheduling, client calls and billing all land on one desk.
Busy, but always tight on cash. Deposits, progress billing and collections are out of step with the bills.
Sales come in feast or famine. No real pipeline, and quotes sit for a week before anyone follows up.
No real job costing. You find out what a job made after it’s done, if you find out at all.

Overhead grew, profit didn’t. More staff, more trucks, a bigger office, and the same net at year end.
Margin leaks between the bid and the final cost. Jobs look good at tender and thinner at closeout.
Nobody can say what actually makes money. Which jobs, clients or divisions pay their way only shows up at year end, when it’s too late to change anything.
Procedures live in people’s heads. Five PMs run a job five different ways, and new hires learn by guessing.
Managers promoted for their technical skill. Good builders, now expected to lead people without anyone showing them how.
Good people are leaving. And morale is slipping in a way everyone can see and nobody’s naming.
A merger, restructure or downsizing hasn’t settled. The org chart changed; how people work together didn’t.
Winning work is a grind. Tendering at thin margins, stuck as a sub, with no real sales effort behind it.
The owners or the board want a plan. For next year, for growth or for succession, and nobody has the time to build it properly.
Someone wants new software. To fix a problem nobody has actually fixed yet.

Questions owners ask before getting started.

What does a construction business coach actually do?

A construction business coach works directly with owners of construction businesses — builders, trades, and the companies around them — to improve the operational and financial performance of their businesses. At Tumbleweed, that means hands-on work with estimating, job costing, overhead recovery, systems, sales flow, and team structure — led by someone who has actually run construction companies, not just studied them.

Do you work with solo operators or only larger companies?

Both. Solo operators are a common starting point, including businesses in their first year — the focus is usually on pricing, job costing, and getting out of the owner-does-everything trap. One-on-one coaching runs up to companies of about 30 staff. Past that, for companies with a management layer up to roughly $75 million in revenue, the work is management consulting and in-person group coaching for the management team.

How much does construction business coaching cost?

It depends which kind of coaching you need. If you’ve got a specific problem to fix, Contractor Fast Track is $3,600 CAD for 12 weeks. If you want general guidance from someone who has run these businesses, ongoing coaching and mentorship is $600 CAD a month for a session every two weeks or $400 CAD a month for one a month, month to month with no minimum term. Fixed-fee diagnostics start at $1,500 CAD. All prices are in Canadian dollars, plus GST.

Do you only work with companies in BC?

No. I'm based in Langley, BC, but coaching and diagnostics run by Google Meet for clients across Canada.

What’s the difference between a diagnostic and coaching?

A diagnostic is a fixed-fee, finite engagement — a focused review of your profit, systems, or sales with a written action plan you can use independently. Coaching is regular sessions with direct support in between: twelve weeks on Contractor Fast Track, ending with a hand-over and a graduation check against the goals you started with, or month to month in mentorship. Either can be the starting point — a diagnostic is never required before coaching.

How long is the discovery call?

Usually somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes. It depends on your situation and how much I need to find out about the business before I can tell you honestly what would help. It's free, and there's no pitch.
